West Coast Language Development Centre (WCLDC) is an independent public school providing high quality specialist education for children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) from Kindergarten to Year 2, and an Outreach service that supports mainstream schools. The centre covers a wide geographic area and is located across four mainstream schools: Padbury, East Hamersley, Poseidon and Quinns Beach Primary Schools. Our teaching follows the West Australian Curriculum, complemented by a specialised language programme designed to meet the learning and social needs of our students. We provide early intervention within a supportive learning environment to maximise learning outcomes for children with DLD.
WCLDC is dedicated to empowering staff by enhancing their knowledge and capacity to support our students. Our team of Speech Pathologists work in close collaboration with educators to deepen their understanding of oral language, implement effective classroom strategies, and tailor instruction to meet student learning needs.
We recognise and value the vital role families play in their child's language development and overall learning. Our Speech Pathology team design and deliver targeted workshops that provide families with practical strategies to support language development at home. Throughout the year, families are also invited to participate in classroom events and attend meetings with teachers, fostering strong partnerships between home and school.
To be considered for a placement at WCLDC, speech pathology assessment and developmental assessments, along with a teacher and/or carer questionnaire need to be provided. Placements are offered following a comprehensive referral process that ensures selection criteria is met and that we support students with the highest need and the best potential to benefit from our targeted learning programs.
Our Outreach service offers support for mainstream schools in the North Metropolitan and MidWest Education Regions to develop their capacity to support students with language difficulties. Our Support Officers work collaboratively with teachers and school staff to share strategies and programs to identify and improve the learning of students who need additional support with oral language.
WCLDC is committed to providing evidence-based, specialist support for children with Developmental Language Disorder through high-quality education, staff development, strong family partnerships, and targeted Outreach services. Together, we strive to create inclusive learning environments that enable every child to thrive.
