Warriapendi Primary School (5518)

School Overview

Warriapendi Primary School is situated in the suburb of Balga. The school community is culturally diverse, with approximately 60% of students speaking a language other than English at home, and 10% identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. The school is proud of and embraces its diversity, valuing the unique perspectives and strengths that these students and families offer.

Our teachers work collaboratively in designing and delivering high-impact lessons following agreed English and Maths Scope and Sequences, using evidence-based approaches such as Explicit Direct Instruction, Let's Decode and Spelling Mastery. Staff drive student progress and achievement through an unwavering focus on high-expectations and individual accountability. Our teachers use fine-grained student data sets to inform their practice, providing all students with opportunities to be challenged at their level and effectively fill identified gaps in knowledge. English and Maths are prioritised, with significant resources committed annually to support the effective implementation of agreed programs and staff professional learning. Staff are supported by two part time Impact Coaches, who model, co-plan, co-teach and release staff to observe our other skilled practitioners in action.

The school establishes the conditions for teaching and learning through a focus on deliberate teaching and reflection upon the school values. Behaviour is exemplary at Warriapendi Primary School, with students being regularly acknowledged for making positive choices. A restorative approach to managing negative behaviours ensures students learn from the experience and are empowered to make better choices. Staff pride themselves on deeply knowing the students and helping them to feel a genuine sense of connection with the school. Highly effective SAER and case management processes are embedded, promoting meaningful consultation and connection between families, school staff, and external agencies. Our student well being officer and school psychologist have a strong presence within the school community and work collaboratively with staff and families to help meet the needs of some of our most at risk students. Families with children aged 0-3 are welcomed into the school community by an on-site Child and Parent Centre that offers health care services, playgroups and parenting workshops that further support our Kindergarten program.

The school has specialist programs in physical education, music, science and Indonesian. Our student leadership program provides Year 6 students with meaningful opportunities to develop their individual leadership skills and to contribute positively to the school community.

Parents are vital partners in the education of their child. We are proud to have the support of a dedicated and active P&C that work together to resource programs and projects. Our talented School Board members act as the governing body focused on improving student learning and informing decision making.

As a finalist for Primary School of the Year in the 2018 WA Education Awards, Warriapendi Primary School's ongoing high performance in NAPLAN is representative of an embedded culture of achievement and high expectations. Staff pride themselves on contributing to the broader education landscape and regularly welcome guests from throughout Australia who wish to see evidence-based, high-impact teaching and learning in action. In 2023, Warriapendi Primary School was announced as a Centre School with the Centre for Excellence in the Explicit Teaching of Literacy, an exciting initiative that provides an opportunity for teachers and principals from other schools to work closely with the team at Warriapendi Primary School to develop explicit teaching and strong cultures in their own schools.
