Kelmscott Primary School (5243)

School Overview

Dynamic schooling. Innovative students. Nurturing community - we are so proud of our school, the amazing location and aspect, and its' connection to the local community - and we can't wait to share this with you and your family.

While the original school is now long gone, Kelmscott Primary School has a long history dating back to 1882, being one of the first schools to be established in the 'suburbs' of Perth. In its early days it provided education to children in a wide area as it was the only school in the region. It has been, and remains, an important and integral part of the Kelmscott community and many of our parents and grandparents attended school here. Much pride is taken from this history, it is recognised as an important factor in the establishment and maintenance of traditions and values that guide our progress, and there is a strong alumni of past students who support the school.

Our vision of dynamic schooling encompasses our developing culture focused on high expectations and developing the next generation of caring, creative, responsible, active citizens of society. Our school places great importance on providing a range of opportunities for students to develop skills, knowledge, attitudes and leadership so that they can contribute to our rapidly changing society. This commitment is demonstrated by the high percentage of students accepted into specialist, and gifted and talented programs in secondary education.

Our experienced teachers tailor learning programs to suit each child's needs. They provide appropriate intervention strategies for those requiring additional support, as well as challenging and stimulating children who are academically talented (for example, our Academic Extension Mathematics Program for children in Years 4 to 6). The school also has a number of specialist programs taught by passionate teachers with expertise in these various fields. This includes a music program, which offers students the opportunity to be participate in instrumental music tuition, a string program and choir who perform every year at the Massed Choir Festival at the Perth Concert Hall. The school facilities include dedicated STEM, Music, Art and Science rooms.

We are also one of 20 schools in the Perth Western Australia that have been selected as a STEM Enterprise School. STEM enterprise schools are a collection of pioneer, mentor and mentee schools that value the importance of providing opportunities for students to engage in enterprise skills such as: creativity, problem solving, teamwork, communication, critical thinking and inter-cultural learning. The overarching aim of the program is to engage students in their learning and create 21st century thinkers with flexible, transferable skills. Our STEM journey and achievements to date, include: holding two First Lego League Awards for robotics and an invitation, and top 10 finish, at the State First Lego League Tournament. At classroom level, teachers are encouraged to integrate STEM through other curriculum areas including English, Science and HASS. An extension group of high achieving mathematics students has also been formed, and will problem solve and utilise enterprise skills to address school and community issues in 2020 and beyond.

At Kelmscott Primary we celebrate our nurturing community, as staff, students, families and the local community work in partnership to support our children. In addition to our active and informed School Board and P&C, we have strong partnerships with the City of Armadale, neighbouring schools and community services to support our students' success.
