In 2022, Girrawheen Senior High School was named Western Australian Secondary School of the Year for Teaching and Learning at the WA Education Awards. Our school places a strong emphasis on improving student academic achievement, ensuring that graduates may enter the world as well-equipped as possible to pursue any opportunity that may become available. In Years 11 and 12, students are offered a diverse range of pathways aligned with their individual career and study aspirations. Our ATAR pathway has supported students in achieving prestigious State Distinction and Merit Awards, as well as State Subject Excellence Awards. Students have outstanding opportunities to gain industry recognised qualifications across a broad range of fields through our Vocational Education and Training (VET) program. For those interested in building and construction, our Trade Training Centre enables students to combine essential theoretical knowledge with practical skills and valuable workplace experience. We adopt a whole-school approach to improving literacy and numeracy outcomes for all students. This approach has proven highly effective, with the school recognised by the Minister for Education, Sue Ellery MLC, for achieving NAPLAN results that demonstrated student achievement and progress well above the national average.
Our dedicated teaching and support staff work collaboratively to create a safe, positive and engaging learning environment for all students. We implement supportive and inclusive initiatives, including the presence of Mia, our school therapy dog, who is on site two days a week and plays an important role in supporting student wellbeing. Girrawheen Senior High School is also proud to have outstanding educators among its staff, including Charan Pabla, the 2021 WA Premier's Secondary Teacher of the Year, who teaches within the STEM learning area.
We support our students to grow their talents and interests through high-quality extension programs. Unique to Girrawheen Senior High School, our Elite Sports Program (ESP) offers students access to professional coaching delivered in partnership with Curtin University Athletic Club, Warwick Senators Basketball, Badminton WA and the Football Futures Foundation. Students can specialise in basketball, badminton or soccer, with athletics embedded across all pathways. In recognition of its impact, the ESP was awarded the Community Engagement Award at the 2025 WA Health and Fitness Acknowledgement Awards.
Students with a passion for the Arts are enriched through our Performing Arts Academy, with specialisations in Dance and Drama. This program partners with industry leading organisations such as WAAPA, Black Swan Theatre Company, Co3 State Contemporary Dance Company, and Youth Ballet WA to foster confidence, teamwork and strong friendships, while providing students with opportunities to compete at State and National levels.
