Meekatharra District High School (4085)

School Overview

At Meekatharra District High School (MDHS) we have high expectations to become lifelong learners, show respect for culture, ourselves and others, and strive for a strong future.

We celebrate positive behaviour choices and together demonstrate respect for: Community, Oneself, Others and Learning.

MDHS caters to the continuous education of students from Kindergarten to Year 12, with over 93 percent of our cohort identifying as Aboriginal. Most of our students come from either the Ngoonooru Wajarri or Yugunga-Nya family groups. Students have an opportunity to learn Wajarri language with an expert teacher as well as other specialist curriculum areas including Health and PE, and Music.

Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (AIEOs) play an important role to culturally advise and support the Meekatharra learning community. They provide important links between home and school and support staff with effective cultural expertise and guidance.

MDHS has a team of committed and dedicated teachers who bring a diverse range of skills and experience. We have recently become a Big Picture Learning school and are excited to support the specific learning needs and interests of our junior secondary classes, while looking to grow into the senior secondary classes in future years.

The school places significant emphasis on quality teaching and learning, specifically literacy and numeracy, student well-being, attendance, and early intervention. The school is fortunate to be a part of the MultiLit - Closing the Gap program. MDHS is also a keen participant in the Scaling Up Success Project supporting strong literacy foundations for children in year K-2 with other Midwest and Goldfields schools. MDHS also hosts a dynamic KindiLink program for pre-school (0-3yrs) aged children and families.

Our learning community works together to create a culturally responsive and engaging school environment where families and the wider community are welcome and invited to be part of the learning too. We partner with local agencies and other external programs to ensure MDHS children have every opportunity to succeed as successful students in an ever-changing world.

MDHS is located 760 kilometres north of Perth, in the Midwest region of WA. The school is a part of the Murchison Network with 7 other schools. MDHS draws from a diverse town population of 708 locally and 1,067 district-wide. Meekatharra (meaning 'place of little water') is located on the Great Northern Highway and is a hub for supplies, government, emergency and medical services, cattle stations, remote Aboriginal communities, mining, prospecting and tourism. The town of Meekatharra is renowned for its beautiful autumn and winter days, hot summer temperatures and spectacular sunsets.
