Read Write Now offers one-on-one literacy and numeracy tutoring to adults
free of charge. It is designed to be accessible and flexible, with the tutor
and student working within an individually designed program, to achieve
the personal goals of the student. Students looking for help come from all
walks of life: some run their own businesses, some are TAFE students needing
help with their course material, some are people who need to learn English
as a second language and some may have a mild intellectual disability. The
program offers confidentiality for students.
With a solid 25 year history, Read Write Now is a dynamic volunteer
organisation with approximately 1000 volunteers, assisting up to 1200
students every year. The program operates throughout the state in 24 regions,
from Broome to Esperance. Local volunteers, who oversee up to 90 tutors,
coordinate each of these regions.
Volunteer tutors undergo a nationally accredited training program that
gives them some skills and strategies for working with adult students.
During the training course they are matched with a student by their regional
coordinator. Ongoing support and advice for tutors is available from coordinators
and the Read Write Now! central office staff.
Local libraries, Neighbourhood Learning Centres and community centres
provide informal venues for tutoring. Read Write Now! has built a strong
alliance with the Library Information Service of WA that also ensures
support at a local level for tutors wanting to access relevant and current
resources.
In association with First Click, Read Write Now is now offering
adult students assistance with the basics of computer literacy. For more
information on becoming a volunteer tutor, or for information on how to
find a tutor, please phone 1800 018 802.
The WA Department of Training is proud to support the Read Write Now!
program. The program also receives in-kind sponsorship from Midland College
of TAFE.
