Aboriginal education

More than one third of the State's Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander population live in the Perth area. However, this group represents only 1.5 percent of Perth’s metropolitan population. By contrast Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander residents make up a much higher proportion of the population in country areas. For example in the Kimberley area 42 percent of the population are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin.

The Department’s Aboriginal Education and Training Directorate works with public schools and vocational education and training (VET) sectors in WA to improve the education and training outcomes of Aboriginal young people and adults.

The Directorate provides advice and support and establishes and monitors standards of Aboriginal education and training. The branch also supports involvement and decision-making between Aboriginal communities and their local schools. There is a range of programs specifically targeted to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in public schools.
