Aboriginal education

More than one third of the State's Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander population live in the Perth area. However, this group represents only 1.5 percent of Perth’s metropolitan population. By contrast Aboriginal residents make up a much higher proportion of the population in country areas. For example in the Kimberley area 42 percent of the population are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander origin.

The Department’s Aboriginal Education Directorate works with public schools in WA to improve the education outcomes of Aboriginal students.

The Directorate provides advice and support, and establishes and monitors standards of Aboriginal education. The Directorate also supports involvement and decision-making between Aboriginal communities and their local schools. There is a range of programs specifically targeted to support Aboriginal students in public schools.
