Superannuation

Once you are employed by the Department of Education as a public school teacher, you automatically become a member of West State Superannuation Scheme. This is managed by the Government Employees Superannuation Board (GESB).

GESB operates three schemes:

  • West State Superannuation (your superannuation fund)
  • Gold State Superannuation (closed to new members)
  • Pension Scheme (closed to new members).

Membership of West State is automatic for all WA Government employees except those who are already members of either Gold State Superannuation or the Pension Scheme.

West State provides teachers with the compulsory employer contributions required under the Commonwealth Superannuation Guarantee arrangements.

The amount the Department pays is 9% of your salary each year.

You can make additional top-up contributions to West State through:

  • personal top-up contributions (from your after tax pay) or
  • packaged employer contributions (called salary packaging and are from before tax pay).

There are also death and disability provisions within West State.
