Leave without pay

If you need to take leave and do not have any annual leave, personal leave or long service leave available, you may be able to apply for leave without pay. Leave is permitted at the discretion of the Department, taking into consideration the staffing requirements of schools.

Time off in lieu

You may be eligible for time off in lieu (TOIL) when you undertake agreed work outside of your normal working hours. This may include time for activities such as school camps or music and drama festivals.

To arrange TOIL for additional work you are going to do, speak to your principal. You need to seek approval in advance to be eligible for toil. Toil cannot be given to you if you seek approval after the work has already been done.

Deferred salary scheme

You may be eligible for the deferred salary scheme which enables you to have a paid year off. This scheme allows you to receive 80 per cent of your salary over a four year period so you are entitled to a fifth year of paid leave at 80 per cent of your salary.

Every application is assessed based on merit and gives consideration to your personal circumstances.
