Teacher support for Health Studies Course

Oct 1, 2009
Secondary school teachers will have support to deliver the Health Studies Course with two new resources from School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA) - Choices: Alcohol and Other Drugs and Licensed to Drive.

SDERA’s new resources - Choices: Alcohol and Other Drugs and Licensed to Drive, have been developed to support the Curriculum Council’s Health Studies Course offered to all secondary students.

Anne Miller, SDERA’s Curriculum and Resource Development Consultant said, “We are very excited at SDERA to be offering these innovative and evidence based resources to secondary schools.

“The resources are designed to assist teachers implementing Stage P and Stage 1 of the Health Studies Course.”

Choices focuses on a broad spectrum of key and relevant alcohol and other drug issues facing young people and focuses on communication and decision-making skills.

The context of road safety is the focus of Licensed. It looks at road safety issues for young people and develops decision-making, risk assessment and problem-solving skills.

The support materials include suggestions for learning opportunities that will develop students’ knowledge, understandings and skills. Teachers’ notes, resource sheets, assessment tasks, marking keys, references to websites, useful sources of information and support agencies, and a CD-ROM are included in Choices and Licensed.

A free copy of Choices was sent to all secondary schools in the state in Term Three, while Licensed is due for release in Term Four. Both the Choices resource PDF and the Licensed resource PDF are available in the resources section of this website.
