Cooloongup Primary School (5606)

School Overview

'The Future is Ours', we say at Cooloongup Primary School - an Independent Public School which offers rich and inclusive programs with embedded 21st century skills from Kindergarten to Year 6. While acknowledging a rich history, our school looks forward with contemporary and evidence-based approaches to learning and teaches for impact. Central to our success is the commitment of our staff, students, parents and leadership team to the continuous improvement our school's core business - the teaching, learning and wellbeing of children.

The Cooloongup Primary School community is both diverse and inclusive, with all students encouraged to thrive at school. We offer an on-site specialised learning program (SLP) for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) with a dedicated team of highly trained teachers and special needs education assistants. The program offers opportunities for targeted approaches for students with autism, whilst also offering integration within a mainstream setting.

We are proud to offer each of our 352 children a complete education through not only the core curriculum areas and general capabilities, but also our specialist programs including music, visual arts, languages (Indonesian and Noongar), physical education and an integrated STEAM approach. Our school offers opportunities for core cultural learning, through our Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO), Bill. He teaches an additional language (Noongar) and leads our traditional dance group the Kaa Kaa Middars. We embed wellbeing and kindness through our school-wide TRIBES program, which teaches attentive listening, appreciations-no put-downs and mutual respect.

As a school we feel that physical education plays an important role in the education of our students while also exposing them to important life skills. Life skills such as persistence and resilience are incorporated through a games based approach which prepares our students for all of life's challenges. We offer a variety of physical education opportunities to our students such as regular morning fitness, specialist health and physical education classes, senior sport where students have the opportunity to represent our school at interschool carnivals, cross country, athletics and lunch time clubs.

Cooloongup offers connections local high schools with specialist programs in academic extension, sporting programs, cheer-dance and music programs. We offer our own extensions in these areas through the Rockingham Area School Sport Association (RASSA), extra-curricular activities including choir, chess, coding and drama clubs, as well as our instrumental music school services (IMSS) programs in guitar and flute.
Our school is well-resourced with technology and develops critical and creative thinking through the 6D approach. Students in the senior phase of learning are part of our new bring your own device (BYOD) program, which allows for the augmentation, modification and redefinition of contemporary learning. Our computer lab allows for each child to have regular access to a desktop computer, and each classroom is also supplied with a cache of iPads.
