River Valley Primary School (5074)

School Overview

River Valley Primary School is an Independent Public School serving the community of Burekup and surrounds. Burekup is the Indigenous Australian name for a local wildflower. We are a small school, with country values, located 20 kms north of Bunbury. Set near the Ferguson Valley in a unique rural setting, on the South West Highway, makes it a desirable location to live.

The school opened in 1999 as a result of the amalgamation of the former Roelands Primary School (est. 1903) and Burekup Primary School (est. 1913). The school has maintained its rural background and has a strong sense of community and community involvement.

River Valley Primary School, is committed to achieving year on year growth for every student. To achieve this, every student's academic and social needs are identified, monitored and achieved via an individualised case management approach.

At River Valley, learning together means every child matters, every child belongs, and every moment counts. Our vision is to provide every child with opportunities to learn, so that they grow to be independent, successful members of society. To foster this, our classes are multi-age grouped and our students have frequent opportunities to engage with their peers in every year level. Our outdoor classroom is the hub of the school, a space that encourages connection and enhances student wellbeing.

Staff regularly engage in professional learning and use contemporary, research-based teaching methods. Our teachers use techniques that have each student working on tasks that engage and challenge them to achieve their personal best. Whole school approaches are embedded in school practice and all staff have ownership for the school improvement process.

We have a purpose built Kindy/Pre Primary centre in the main building. Our specialized team of early childhood teachers and education assistants provide innovative and engaging programs integrating the Early Years Learning Framework with the Western Australian Curriculum. The school has a strong focus on literacy and numeracy and early intervention and extension for identified students.

Our positive and challenging teaching programs allow all students to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to become confident independent learners. Multi aged grouping is a feature of the school allowing for extension and remediation for students.

River Valley students consistently earn entrance into a range of local Senior High Schools that offer academic and extension programs. For students residing in Roelands, the local intake High School is Australind SHS; for students residing in Burekup, the local intake High School is Bunbury SHS.

River Valley implements the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) strategy which helps to create positive learning environments. Our school values, defined by the community, guide the behaviour of everyone in our school; staff, students, parents and community members. This is achieved by developing proactive systems to define, teach and support appropriate student behaviour. Our school values reflect our desire to see students be ambitious and strive for success, to take responsibility for their learning and to care for others. Our values are Resilience, Responsibility and Respect (3R's).

Students are taught in modern classrooms. Pre-primary and Kindy students have their own outdoor play area. Students have access to the community oval and tennis courts and basketball courts. The school is fully air-conditioned, providing a pleasant learning environment all year round.

Students, staff and the community embrace the school ethos of 'Learning Together'.
