Information for parents

All young people, in Western Australia, in their 16th and 17th years must be in education, training or employment.

This doesn't mean they have to stay in school full-time; there are lots of options.

If your child chooses to stay in full-time schooling you don't need to do anything but if they decide on one of the other options you are responsible for completing the appropriate form so it's approved.

When it comes to choosing options and completing the forms there is lots of help. You can either contact your school or one of the Managers Participation at your district education office. There is also help available from TAFEWA counsellors, local employment agencies and staff at Employment Directions Networks and Youth Pathways.

If your child doesn't seem interested in any of the options, Participation Coordinators can help plan a personalised program. They can be contacted through the Manager Participation at your district education office.

With all these options you've probably got lots of questions so visit our FAQ page where we have covered most things.

Information for parents can also be found in the brochure Changes to the leaving age (pdf brochure - 24 pages). Or you can just download the pages relevant to parents.
