OVERVIEW OF CHANGES – NEW STRATEGIC PLANS

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING – INFORMATION STATEMENT 2009

This document provides an overview of the Department, so that people may understand the nature of the Department’s work and the type of documents that are available. This document supersedes the Department of Education and Training – Information Statement 2006 document.

RECONCILIATION ACTION PLAN 

The Reconciliation Action Plan identifies actions that will be taken by the Department to build partnerships with Aboriginal Australians and improve education outcomes for Aboriginal students.

OVERVIEW OF CHANGES – NEW POLICIES

PROCUREMENT

The Procurement policy describes specific internal procurement procedures that support compliance with the State Supply Commission Act and its Partial Exemption including submission of material to the Procurement Committee.

WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS 

The Working With Children Checks policy is aimed at fulfilling the Department’s obligations under the Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act 2004, which makes it compulsory for people in child-related work to apply for a Working with Children Check (WWCC).

OVERVIEW OF CHANGES – REVISED POLICIES

ATTENDANCE 

A minor change had been made to section 4.5(a) regarding referrals to School Attendance Panels.

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT IN SCHOOLS 

Section 6.1.2 - Management of Student Mobile Phones has been updated to reflect the Ed-e-mail distributed by the Director General on 25 February 2009 regarding ‘preventing inappropriate use of mobile phones in schools’.

ENROLMENT 

The guideline under section 6.5.5 regarding the education of holders of visitor visas has been changed to a mandatory procedure.

LOCAL RECRUITMENT,SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT OF TEACHING STAFF 

The policy has been updated to reflect the use of the online system for recruitment, selection and appointment as detailed in the Ed-e-mail distributed by the Director General on 24 June 2009. The Reform Coordination Unit has made further revisions to the policy to simplify the policy’s content and to replace out-of-date information.

OFFICIAL AIR TRAVEL 

Appendix A of the policy has been updated to included references to Assistant Executive Directors.

SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAYS 2009

A guideline has been added to section 5.1 regarding reconfiguration of the designated school development day on Friday, 18 December 2009.

This policy has been removed. It has been replaced with a link to the Handwriting guidelines on the Department’s K-10 Syllabus website.

LOCAL AREA EDUCATION PLANNING

This policy has been removed, as approved by the Director-General.

OVERVIEW OF CHANGES – REVISED CEO INSTRUCTIONS

DECLARATION OF LOCAL-INTAKE AREAS FOR SCHOOLS

Section 2 of this document has been amended slightly, with the words “shall have local-intake areas” changed to “shall not be local-intake schools”.
