Vision Education Service (VES)

Students with vision impairment are supported by the Vision Education Service (VES) which ensure that these students have the same learning opportunities and outcomes as their normally sighted peers.

Overview

The aim of VES is to enable students with vision impairment to achieve equitable educational outcomes.

VES provides statewide support to students with vision impairment at home and in both public and private schools.

Services include an early intervention program, visiting teacher program, the provision of assistive technology, an Orientation and Mobility (O&M) program and a Transcription and Resource Unit.

The role of VES is to:

  • assist in the development of emergent literacy and numeracy in the home
  • provide support to parents
  • work collaboratively with classroom teachers on developing appropriate teaching and learning adjustments required for students from Kindegarten through to Year 12
  • teach students the specific skills required for them to participate in the range of curriculum activities offered by their school
  • provide materials in alternative formats (Braille, Large Print and Audio Tapes) and necessary hardware and software
