Sport, recreation and leisure

Sport, recreation and leisure activities play an important part in everyone’s life.

Participating in sport, recreation and leisure opportunities is an important way for people to develop and maintain their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing and have fun!

The benefits of sport, recreation and leisure include:

  •  fun, enjoyment and a sense of freedom
  • participation in the community
  • developing a sense of value and identity
  • meeting people and making new friends
  • adventure, challenge and new experience
  • increased motivation and enthusiasm for the future
  • a balance to other areas of life
  • developing skills and understandings

Sport, recreation and leisure activities can include:

  • playing sport, being an instructor, coach, manager, official, fundraiser, volunteer, spectator
  • going for a walk
  • knitting
  • reading
  • working in the garden
  • having coffee with friends
  • going on a holiday
  • collecting coin

Recreation and Sport Network provides information and support to people with a disability who want to become involved in community recreation and sport.

Western Australian Disabled Sports Association (WADSA) 
WADSA is a charitable, non profit making, sport and recreation umbrella organisation for disabled individuals and groups.

Department of Sport and Recreation encorages to the healthy lifestyle of Western Australians by increasing physical activity in the community through sport and recreation. 

Australian Athletes with a Disabilities

Australian Athletes with a Disability is responsible for the administration of:

  • Australian Sports Organisation for the Disabled (ASOD)
  • Cerebral Palsy Sports and Recreation Federation of Australia (CPASRF)
  • Wheelchair Sports Australia (WSA)

Australian Paralympic Committee is the peak national body responsible for Australia’s elite athletes with a disability

The Telstra Paralympic Education Program (TPEP) is a program of the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC) which aims to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding of Paralympic athletes and all people with disabilities, while inspiring students to be the best they can be.

Commonwealth Carelink Centres can provide free information about locally available leisure and recreation opportunities.
