Pathways to Social and Emotional Development (P2SED)

Pathways to Social and Emotional Development (P2SED) is a professional resource for educators. This package describes a continuum of social and emotional development for children from the time of conception to late adolescence and seeks to assist teachers in understanding how this development affects learning and learning outcomes.

Overview

P2SED has been created in partnership with the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research and provides practical strategies for teachers:

  • to increase their knowledge of children’s social and emotional development
  • to encourage the development of positive teacher–student relationships

P2SED consists of five booklets:

Booklet 1

  • provides a definition of social and emotional development
  • describes the factors that impact on students' development
  • describes the links to the Curriculum Framework for Kindergarten to Year 12 Education
  • explores the links between theory and classroom practice and connects to a professional learning strategy

Booklets 2-5

  • outlines the critical social and emotional tasks which occur across each developmental phase
  • tasks are organised according to four themes identified in the research: attachment and connectedness, emotional regulation, moral development, autonomy and identity
