30 October 2014

Time of issue: 3:10 pm

As well as the closure of Newman Senior High School, the department advises that the adjacent South Newman Primary School was closed this afternoon and will remain closed tomorrow, Friday 31 October 2014, following the recent fire.

Regional Executive Director Sue Cuneo said the primary school closure was purely a precautionary measure while a full assessment and clean-up of the secondary school site was completed.

“Student and staff safety is always our main concern, so we have closed South Newman Primary School until we have confirmation the area is safe,” she said.

“We are very conscious of the need to ensure student learning is not unduly disrupted, so we have found alternative accommodation for all students.

“Newman Senior High School Year 11 students studying ATAR subjects will be located at Newman House, and all other Year 11 students will be learning at the Pilbara Institute as of tomorrow (Friday 31 October 2014), following their normal teaching programs.

“All other students from both schools are asked to stay home tomorrow (Friday 31 October 2014).”

“Newman Senior High School students in Years 8, 9 and 10 and all students from South Newman Primary School will be learning at Newman Primary School from Monday (3 November 2014).

The Department of Finance has officers on-site today and contractors have already been engaged to deal with the immediate issues regarding site safety and clean-up.

The Department is collaborating with the Department of Finance to ensure that the school will be reopened for students as soon as possible.

Early estimates put the damage bill at around $2.5 million.
