Premier's Teacher of the Year

Recognising professional excellence in teaching that has led to improved learning, increased student wellbeing and expanded opportunities.

Prizes:
• One individual prize of $25 000 for the Premier’s Teacher of the Year
• Three individual prizes of $2 500 for State finalists

Eligibility:
• The nominee may be nominated in only one individual category.
• Any recognised professionally qualified teacher teaching in a Western Australian pre-primary (early childhood), primary or secondary public school, with a significant proportion of the week dedicated to classroom teaching, is eligible.
• Anyone who knows the work of the teacher can nominate them including colleagues, school leaders, community members, parents and students.
• Previous winners of a WA Education Award in any of the individual categories will not be considered for a 2009 award.
• Self-nomination in individual categories will not be accepted.
• Posthumous nominations will not be accepted.
• Joint nominations for individuals operating on a tandem, team or job share basis will not be accepted.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Nominations must address each of the three selection criteria. Please note that the prompts under each selection criterion may not be applicable to all nominees and should be used as a guide to the range of information that could be included.

1. Professional knowledge and understanding
• appropriate knowledge of factors that influence learning and development
• knowledge of teaching specialisation such as discipline and/or stage of schooling
• application of relevant theories, research, models and experience
• use of appropriate pedagogies, interactive technologies and a wide range of resources

2. Professional practice
• creating stimulating and challenging learning opportunities for all students
• using assessment and reflection to inform planning and learning
• creating safe, inclusive and supportive learning environments
• building effective relationships and partnerships

3. Professional leadership
• contributing to school planning, development and management
• encouraging and leading opportunities for professional learning and reflection
• contributing to the confidence, resilience and success of the school community
• adapting to change and embracing new opportunities
• participating in personal professional development

ASSESSMENT

In assessing nominations, judges will take into account evidence such as:
• student performance data
• information on student participation and engagement
• creative and innovative practice
• outcomes from professional development
• results of working collaboratively.
