The National Benchmark
The national benchmark standard is the agreed standard of performance
that professional educators across the country deem to be the minimum
level required for Year 3, 5 and 7 students to make adequate progress.
The WALNA assessment materials are designed to measure the range
of performance expected of Year 3, Year 5 and Year 7 students, including
achievement of the benchmark standard. The results from the WALNA
program assist teachers to identify those students who would benefit
from extension, as well as those students not meeting the minimum
expected standard.
While the tests give an indication of how students are performing
in relation to the National Benchmark, they also measure student
performance in relation to the Outcomes and Standards Framework
and provide comparative information on student performance in relation
to State performance.

The Western Australian Government School Achievement Targets (WAGSATs)
The WAGSATs are defined at years 3,5,7 and 9. They are embedded
in the Outcomes and Standards Framework and describe realistic
yet challenging targets for student performance at those year levels.
