Introduction to Teacher Exchange

2010 TEACHER EXCHANGE PROGRAM – WESTERN AUSTRALIA

The 2010 program call for applications is now open – applications close on Monday, 15th December 2008.  No emailed or faxed applications will be accepted.

The Western Australian (WA) Department of Education and Training’s (Department) Teacher Exchange Program is an opportunity for experienced teachers and other practitioners within WA schools and district offices to further develop their skills by practising in a different education system and a new environment. Many exchangees find that a year in another system is an enormous boost to their effectiveness and enthusiasm as an educator.

As an exchangee, you will be an ambassador for WA public schools and the Department.  The main objectives for participating in an exchange should be to provide you with an opportunity to compare and learn about different education systems, to exchange ideas and knowledge, and to contribute to the professional development of yourself and your colleagues.

WA public school teachers can download the program guidelines and application form to determine eligibility for participation in the 2010 program.

Overview and Outcomes
The 2009 Japanese Scholarship Exchange Program is a exchange opportunity supported by the Western Australian Department of Education and Training and Hyogo Prefectural Board of Education, Japan. The scholarship exchange program operates within an agreement between both education authorities.

The Exchange Program provides an opportunity for language teachers of Japanese from public schools in Western Australia to apply for a scholarship in the 2009 program commencing in January. Preference will be given to Japanese language teachers from secondary schools. The program aims to:

  • enhance educational profiles in both Hyogo, Japan and Western Australia;
  • broaden the personal and professional language experience of participating teachers by providing an opportunity to enhance skills and knowledge in a different teaching environment;
  • contribute to education by focussing on the initiatives of different education systems;
  • contribute to the enrichment of participating host schools;
  • promote networking between students, teachers and schools; and
  • acknowledge the commitment and contribution of effective teachers from both education authorities.

2009 Scholarship Exchange Program for practising Japanese Language Teachers
The successful scholarship recipient will receive a Department scholarship up to a maximum $5 000 (cash advance) for their airfare and program related incidentals. A full list of relevant incidentals will be provided to the successful scholarship recipient. The recipient will also be required to provide an itemised list of expenditure with actual receipts on return from Japan.

Subsidised apartment style accommodation in Hyogo, Japan will be provided to the successful scholarship recipient by the Hyogo Prefectural Board of Education. Please note: during the exchange the WA language teacher will not be required to make their own accommodation available to the incoming Japanese language teacher from Hyogo Prefectural Board of Education.

The duration of the scholarship exchange program for the WA language teacher is one school year commencing in January 2009 (specific dates still to be confirmed by Hyogo Prefectural Board of Education). During the exchange, the WA language teacher remains an employee of the Department, retaining their normal salary, usual rights, privileges and obligations. The WA language teacher will work full-time under the conditions of the host education authority (Hyogo Prefectural Board of Education) and abide by the instructions of the host principal in matters relating to school management.
