Focus Four is a non-compulsory Year 4 reading and numeracy assessment (Focus Four) that has been specifically designed to monitor the performance of Year 4 students who, as Year 3 students in 2005, were assessed using WALNA as being ‘close to’ or not meeting the National Benchmark.
The Focus Four assessments are not suitable for all students, as they are specifically targeted to measure the skills of students who are considered to be at risk of not meeting the Year 5 National Benchmark.
The reading and numeracy items for Focus Four are taken from previous WALNA assessments that form part of the Monitoring Standards in Education Reading and Numeracy Developmental Profiles.
Classroom teachers and specialist teachers should refer to students’ previous Year 3 WALNA results alongside other performance information to determine who sits the assessment.
It is recommended that these assessments are administered in term 3 or early term 4 to coincide with the administration of the Year 3, 5 and 7 WALNA testing timeline.
Use the School Assessment Materials Order Form to order test booklets.
Administration guidelines, electronic recording sheets and performance profiles have been developed so teachers can mark and record student performances to avoid delay in working with the results.
