This book is an outcome of a cooperative research project between Curtin University of Technology and the Education Department of Western Australia. The research was carried out with the aid of a grant to John Wallace, Léonie Rennie and John Malone, of the Key Centre for School Science and Mathematics, from the Australian Research Council (ARC Cooperative Grants Scheme) and administered through Curtin University of Technology. We are grateful to Fred Deshon, Kathy Melsom and Thelma Perso from the Education Department, for their generous assistance to us.
We wish to thank all of the teachers and students from the schools which were involved in the project for their cooperation and participation. We particularly thank the teachers and principals who checked the case studies included in this report and gave permission for their inclusion.
We thank also David Henderson and Rod Beresford for their assistance in liaising with schools to finalise the case studies. The interpretations provided in this paper are those of the authors and should not be attributed to the granting body or other participants in the study.
