TECHNOLOGY AND ENTERPRISE

General Information

The MSE Technology and Enterprise School Assessment Materials consist of 9 tasks designed for Year 3, Year 7 or Year 10 students.

All tasks address the Technology Process learning outcomes through one or more of the Materials, Systems or Information strands. The outcomes of these strands are also addressed in the assessment tasks.

Before conducting assessments, teachers should leave themselves enough time to read the relevant teachers manual to become familiar with the standardized administration procedures and assessment requirements.

The tasks are based on the learning contexts that are most common in the WA government school system.

Task Stimulus Materials

All tasks require prescribed stimulus materials. For some tasks, schools are required to provide these materials. For other tasks, teachers or their assistants prepare materials using templates and/or instructions that come in the assessment package. For details, read the instructions in Teacher's Manual before proceeding with the assessments.

For some tasks, class sets of coloured and/or black and white stimulus sheets are provided by MSE. Schools should keep the sheets for use with other classes and for future assessments.

Stimulus materials, as well as the Teachers Manuals, are the property of schools. Teachers and administrators should ensure that they are kept in a safe place for future assessments.

Secondary School Tasks

Technology and Enterprise Learning Area staff may review the information on the primary school tasks, as it is appropriate to consider the use of the Year 7 assessment tasks with lower secondary school students. For this reason, instructions for administering the Year 7 assessments have been included in the Secondary Teachers Manuals.

Design and Technology Context
Note:
The Design and Technology Teachers Manual contains instructions for the Year 7 task Give Gifts Again and the Year 10 task Yurton Souvenir.

Year 10: Yurton Souvenir (Materials strand: wood or metal)
This task, administrated with a class group, requires students to work either with wood or metal to make a prototype of a souvenir. A newsletter, which provides the design context for students, is provided and students have a booklet in which they answer questions. To assist students to answer these questions, a material sample sheet (about selected woods, metals and finishes) is supplied for each student. Students also require material samples.

A prototype for this activity refers to a fully-working version of a product made to resemble as closely as possible the design and construction techniques intended for manufacture. Therefore, it is as close to the finished product as possible. Students are not required to apply finishes (eg paint) to their prototype.
