LOTE

General Information

The LOTE school assessment materials are available in four target languages:

  • Italian (year 7 only)
  • Indonesian (year 7 only)
  • French (years 7 and 10)
  • Japanese (years 7 and 10)

Within each language, there are 4 assessments:

  • Viewing, Reading and Responding
  • Listening and Responding
  • Speaking
  • Writing

The Italian and Indonesian tasks are designed for year 7 students who have completed 4 years of learning in the target language. The French and Japanese tasks are designed for year 10 students who have completed 3 years of learning in the target language. It is therefore best to use the materials with these students. However, some schools may choose to use the materials with other year groups and with students who have more or less language learning experience.

Assessment decisions usually depend on what information is required. For example, secondary schools may use year 7 materials at the commencement of the school year to inform the organisation of year 8 language classes. In other cases, teachers can plan learning programs for other year groups by assessing for diagnostic information on the skills and understandings that students may or may not have.

Assessing Performance Tasks

Teachers are required to assess student Speaking performances in real time. To assist teachers to do this, the Speaking assessment materials contain teacher training materials that should be completed before conducting the assessments.

By using the training materials, teachers gain:

  • a shared understanding of the criteria used to judge performances; and
  • consistency with teachers using these assessment materials in other schools, and with the judgements of markers in the MSE testing programs.

As the marking keys are developed using the levels of the student outcome statements, the video is a valuable moderating tool for LOTE Speaking.

Teachers may find it easier to video student performances, then assess at a later date. This will help maintain consistency in marking and to give a point of reference when marking.

The training materials consist of either a CD (French and Japanese) or a video (Italian and Indonesian) of student performances and the teachers manual.

The CD and video contain student performances at a range of outcome levels. The manual contains the marking key that is used to judge student performances.

It is important that teachers complete the training materials before conducting the Speaking assessment so that the school results can be validly compared to state data.
