THE ARTS

General Information

MSE school assessment materials are available in four art forms:

  • Drama (Years 3, 7 and 10)
  • Visual Arts (Years 3, 7 and 10)
  • Music (Years 3, 7 and 10)
  • Media (Year 10)

Visual Arts and Media assessments derive from the 2003 Random Sample and cover Arts Skills and Processes and Arts Responses. Media also covers Arts Ideas.

Drama and Music assessments derive from the 1996 Random Sample. Each involve two tasks:

  • An analysis task
  • A process task

There is no historical linking between the 1996 and 2003 Arts assessment materials as the 2003 assessment materials are linked to the 1998 Student Outcome Statements.

Before conducting assessments, teachers should leave themselves enough time to read through the Teacher Manual to become familiar with the standardised administration procedures and the assessment requirements.

Important note: The 'Fit' statistics for the 1996 Arts Random Sample were derived through combining the data from both the Analysis and Process tasks. As the School Assessment Materials are based on the Random Sample assessments, it is therefore necessary for students to complete both tasks. The raw scores from both tasks are then combined so that valid comparisons can be made with the state performance

Assessing Performance Tasks

The Media task and the Process tasks for Drama and Music are performance tasks.

For the Media task, students produce a short visual text which is assessed by the teacher in conjunction with student responses in the test booklets.

For Drama and Music, teachers are required to assess student performances in real time. However, teachers may find it easier to video the performances for assessment at a later date. This will help to maintain consistency in marking and to have a point of reference. Instructions on how to successfully video the tasks are in the relevant Teacher Manual.

Marking criteria are provided in the Teacher Manuals. Teachers should familiarise themselves with the criteria before commencing assessment of student performances. To make valid assessments, teachers should apply the criteria consistently.

Schools are provided with stimulus materials to use with the assessments. These materials should be kept in schools for use with other classes and for future assessments.
