Welcome to Monitoring Standards in Education

We are part of the Standards and Moderation Directorate in the Department of Education and Training, Western Australia.

A cornerstone of the Department's operations is to ensure quality education provision to all students, irrespective of their background or geographical location. As part of these operations, Monitoring Standards in Education (MSE) conducts a number of assessment programs.

From 2008, the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will replace the Western Australian Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (WALNA) for Years 3, 5 and 7 and the Monitoring Standards in Education at Year 9 (MSE9) for the assessment of literacy and numeracy.

The NAPLAN assessments in Language Conventions, Writing, Reading and Numeracy will be held on 13, 14 and 15 May, 2008.

Click here for details of the NAPLAN assessments: http://www.det.wa.edu.au/education/naplan

Further information is available on the following current and historic programs:

1. the Random Sample Assessment Program

2. the MSE9 (Monitoring Standards in Education Year 9) assessment; and

3. the WALNA (Western Australian Literacy and Numeracy Assessment)..

This internet site will give you information about the Random Sample program. This program achieves three major goals:

  • It provides information to stakeholders about the progress students make in their learning
  • It assists the Department and schools to monitor and report student performance
  • It assists the Department and schools to plan for improvement in student performance

The Department also produces School Assessment Materials for the key learning areas. These materials assist schools to fulfill their accountability requirements as well as provide diagnostic information to teachers on the strengths and weaknesses in individual student learning. This information can help teachers plan for student progress through the curriculum.
