FELLOWSHIPS

Craig Ashby, Principal Bannister Creek Primary School and Rick Firns, Principal Ashdale Primary School presented the findings of their Leadership Centre Fellowship from late 2007 at our recent Board Meeting. Their Fellowship included a study tour to the United Kingdom and Singapore and it occurred within the context of specific school based needs and the priorities of the Department of Education and Training as articulated in the Plan for Government Schools (2004 – 2007). 

In particular, the central notions of values driven leadership and inclusive education relate directly to the Focus 2007 – Directions for Schools plan and its priorities of the Curriculum Framework, standards in literacy and numeracy, building capacity in assessment, standards of student behaviour, well being and health and professional standards and conduct.

The fellowship also has direct links to the Department’s Classrooms First document.

The study tour was based primarily around the work of Professor Clive Dimmock and his co-authored paper “Effective Leadership in Multi-Ethnic Schools”.

The following school leadership issues were examined:

• Values driven school leadership
• The creating of an inclusive school culture
• A focus on teaching and learning
• Implications for school staffing profiles
• The links between the school and the community
