Manual handling training is offered to staff who are at identifiable risk from handling students or equipment as a part of their occupational duties. Those people may be;

  • Gardeners;
  • Special Needs Workers
  • Agricultural Workers
  • Registrars
  • Education Assistants

People in these occupational groups are identified as being at risk. The Occupational Safety and Health legislation requires the employer to offer such training and information as is necessary for them to perform their duties safely.

The training comprises a 45 minute introduction to basic back care, Occupational Safety and Health legislation and examples specific to the group. That is followed by a hands-on program (1-2 1/2 hours depending on need).

The style of manual handling favoured by the Department is called Manutention. It was devised by a French physiotherapist about 20 years ago and concentrates upon imparting techniques which maximise self protective behaviour. The techniques are often based on weight-lifting, the martial arts and roping (rock climbing). The techniques may only be taught by a qualified practitioner.

The techniques are not necessarily complex but they do have to be practiced. It is important that participants experience having the techniques practiced on themselves as well as practicing them upon their training colleagues.

The training is free and coordinated by the District Office Support Officers in each district. Initial training is always away from the workplace. Subsequent training may be at the workplace and will focus on specific handling problems with equipment or students.

For further information about Manutension training courses, times and dates, please contact the Department's Safety Officers (9264 8636 or 9264 8634).
