It is the Department's duty of care to provide staff with adequate training to enable them to perform their expected duties safely. Staff working in remote locations may be required to drive four wheel drive vehicles as part of their employment. Therefore all staff working in these remote locations are requested, as part of their induction, to successfully complete a four wheel drive defensive driving course prior to starting in their new position.

The two day defensive four wheel drive course is a Nationally Accredited Short Course currently presented by the Driver Training and Education Centre, a Registered Training Organisation. The centre utilises researched road safety information to provide drivers with education in risk assessment techniques, low risk defensive driving exercises and safe practical off-road four wheel drive experiences.

The course combines a balance of facilitated theory sessions combined with substantial on-road and off-road driving experiences that reinforces the risks associated with driving. It provides valuable education on hazard recognition methods and practical driving skills both on and off-road, to improve and encourage safe driving habits. The safe use of four wheel drive recovery equipment and associated four wheel driving techniques, together with basic maintenance and fault finding, equips participants to safely drive and recover a four wheel drive vehicle in the on and off-road environment.

The learning outcomes of the Department's Two Day Defensive Four Wheel Drive Course are as follows:

Discuss and demonstrate the risk management strategies that apply to driving a four wheel drive vehicle.	Demonstrate knowledge of four wheel drive vehicle inspection, basic fault finding, maintenance and load positioning.
Apply correct seating position whilst driving.	Demonstrate correct steering and accelerator technique.
Apply correct braking technique.	Utilise correct four wheel drive technique.
Observe correct four wheel drive recovery technique including wheel changing.	Employ correct braking, steering and risk management to a simulated emergency situation.

The course is a full two day course commencing at 8.30am sharp and concluding at 4.30pm each day. The course utilises a training room situation at the centre and the practical sessions are conducted on road and off-road in metropolitan and country locations.

Participants will be required to supply their own lunch, water and drinks for the day. A car fridge or an esky will be provided in the vehicle to store lunch and drinks. As much of the course is practical, appropriate closed footwear is essential along with appropriate clothing, including hats, to provide adequate sun protection. Sunscreen will be available on the day.
