Brief Description: Understanding and use of a box plot.
Expected Outcomes:
  • Select and interpret information.
  • Collect and record data.
Context:
  • Year 10, Foundations of Mathematics and Applicable Mathematics.
  • An activity that explores a particular form of stats display and attempts to identify key features.
Learning Activities/
Experience:
1. Students record their heights (or some other appropriate data) by measuring.

2. Measurements are then read out so that all can be put into graphic calculator.

3. Teacher gives necessary key strokes so that students have data displayed as a box plot.

4. Students explore box plot and data to determine what significant features it is that the box plot is displaying.

5. Can they find numbers that will display a particular box plot - eg Find 10 numbers that would produce the box plot:

6. Are there other sets of 10 numbers that would also give this box plot?

Resources:
  • Graphic Calculator (with box plot facility) for each student/pair of students.
