Introduction

Casio CFX 9850G/G+

The Casio CFX - 9850G/G+ is a graphic calculator similar in function to most graphic calculators that are currently available to students.

They may be linked to one another through a short cable, which allows information to be transferred from one machine to another and between the calculator and data analyser.

Computer software and hardware [Casio Program - Link (FA - 122)] is also available for allowing communication between a Macintosh or PC and the calculator.

This makes the writing of programs much easier and allows the user to either download programs, data and/or graphs from the calculator to the computer or vice versa through the use of simple programs and a flexible cable.

There are an increasing number of programs available from the Internet, reference books and associated disks.

Casio Data Analyser (EA - 100)

The Casio Data Analyser (EA - 100) is a physical data collection device that can be used either in conjunction with the Casio CFX - 9850G/G+ or by itself.

This allows the automatic, semi - automatic or manual collection and recording of data, which can be analysed and interpreted by young scientists (and old ones too!).

Probes

A number of probes are available for the collection of various experimental variables. Some of these include:

Accelerometer
Barometer
Biology Gas Pressure Sensor
Calorimeter
Conductivity Probe
Current and Voltage System
Dissolved Oxygen Probe
EKG Sensor
Heart Rate Monitor
Light Sensor
Magnetic Field Sensor
Motion Detector
Pasco Force Sensor
pH Sensor
Photogate
Pressure Sensor
Relative Humidity Sensor
Respiration Monitor Belt
Smart Pulley Set
Sound Capture
Student Force Sensor
Temperature Probe
Thermocouple
Voltage Probe

The Casio Data Analyser (EA - 100) comes with a temperature probe, light sensor and voltage probe. The other probes need to be purchased separately as required and/or funds allow.

Authors' Notes

We have found that, with just the three probes, quite a number of experiments can be carried out. Students are able to collect data using the Data Analyser, which they can then download into their calculators and analyse.

Alternatively, the teacher can conduct an experiment as a demonstration using the Data Analyser, the students then download the data into their calculators and analyse it.

A significant number of Physics and Chemistry experiments already exist which can be easily adapted and carried out in this manner.

We have used this approach with a number of the experiments found in the STAWA Chemistry Laboratory Manual, the Physics Investigations in Context Year 11 and Physics Investigations in Context Year 12 books.
