Matrix Transformations

By Steve Ottaway, Padbury SHS
If you use or quote from the following program, please acknowledge the author above.

As part of the year 12 Applicable Mathematics course students must draw a geometric shape both before and after a premultiplication by a transformation matrix.

Before running this program the user must enter the 2 x 2 transformation matrix in matrix A (using the Matrix Menu) and the n ordered pairs of vertices of the object (graph) to be transformed in Matrix B, as a 2 by n+1 matrix. (Both Column 1 and column n+1 are the starting vertex.)

Below are a set of screen dumps. Be careful there is an overlap of screens.

The user entered matrices are being multiplied, stored and then transposed before being stored in the Stats lists in preparation for Stats graphing.

Matrix C is to be displayed. It is the transformed matrix.
It is essential to set the graph scale to automatic.

These screens (above and below) contain the commands necessary to draw the graphs from the lists of data.

Key press sequences
MatOPTN, F2, F1
TrnOPTN, F2, F4
Mat -> List (OPTN, F2, F2
 SHIFT, VARS, F5

The following icon bar is the basis of the next instructions.

Always read the screen!

S - WindAutoSHIFT, MENU, F6, F6, F3, F1
S - Gph1F4, F1, F2, F1
DrawOnF4, F1, F1, F1
xyLineF4, F1, F2, F5
List1F4, F1, F3, F1
CrossF4, F1, F4, F2
BlueF4, F1, F5, F1
Draw StatSHIFT, VARS, F6, F2, F1

NOTE: It would be possible to improve this program if the points and the transformation matrix could be entered while running the program.
