Vocational Education and Training (VET)
What is it ?
Vocational Education and Training is education and training for work. It exists to develop and
recognise the competencies or skills of learners. Vocational Education and Training is
an industries-led system though the leadership of
industry-recognised training packages by representative bodies.
Training Packages specify the competencies that must be achieved from the learning materials, industries requirements for assessment, and that result from competence.
Across the Canning district, VET is part of approved secondary study
programs. These courses are nationally recognised as entry level training
and the qualification is transportable across Australia.
Students undertaking VET in schools gain dual accreditation for both the Certificate of Secondary Graduation and a VET qualification.
The following strategies form the basis of effective pathway
development for VET students ensuring successful transition.
- Explicit and well-articulated pathways that ensure young people have access to courses of
study that not only provide industry recognised qualifications but that are also
recognised for the entry to university.
- Community Partnerships that involve schools, training providers, business/ industry and employers, educational institutions, government agencies and the wider community.
- Lifelong learning skills and attributes, including a positive attitude, that enhances immediate employability as well as forming a solid foundation for the future.
- Career information, guidance and access to student services that is attractive, comprehensive, accurate and accessible through education, training and labour market sources.
- Supportive schools and funding arrangements that are ongoing, cohesive,
organised and involve all relevant stakeholders.
- Monitoring and evaluation that providers information on participation, completion rates and destinations, and examines the effectiveness of current and future arrangements.
