Early Childhood Education

Planning For 2001

Clusters in the district are undertaking planning for Kindergarten provision in the year 2001. 2001 will see an increase in starting age for students attending Kindergarten. Children will need to be four before 30 June to be eligible for Kindergarten in 2001.

Provision will also increase from two half days to four half days a week. In 2002 children will need to be five before 30 June to be eligible for pre-primary.

See also the Early Childhood Education website.

Multi-Age Grouping

Seven schools in the district are implementing multi-age programs in the early years. The district has conducted a number of workshops to raise awareness of MAG programs and support staff undertaking this approach in schools.

The District Office (with WAPPA) has supported the compilation of a MAG Booklet which will offer practical guidance and information for school administrators and teachers contemplating the provision of MAG in their school.

Action Research

The District Office is supporting a number of teachers in investigating and using a Child Initiated Approach to teaching and learning.

Planning And Assessment In An Outcomes World

The challenge for kindergarten and pre-primary teachers is finding appropriate ways to demonstrate student progress towards Level One. The dilemma for many teachers is deciding on what and how much data to collect. A number of teachers are referring to the South Australian booklet Foundation Areas of Learning as this clearly articulates outcomes appropriate for young children.

Look out for a district workshop on making the links between this document and the Curriculum Framework.
