District Education Services - Multi-disciplinary Approach

The Canning Education Services Team provides comprehensive, targeted support to schools through an integrated team approach. In recognition of the complexities and differences in student needs the Aboriginal Education, Curriculum and Student Services teams work together to address the needs of individual and groups of students and school communities.

Support provided by the Education Services Team is tailored to the particular needs of each school and flexible, creative solutions are negotiated in collaboration with school-based personnel.

Programs and support provided by the Education Services Team link directly to Department of Education and Training system initiatives and the Plan for Government School Education 2004 – 2007.

The multi-disciplinary approach in Canning is facilitated by five Team Leaders who each work with a team comprising (or with access to) School Psychologists, Aboriginal Education Coordinator, Curriculum Improvement Officers, Aboriginal Liaison Worker, Social Workers, RAPP Coordinator, Welfare Officer and EVE Coordinators. Each team is responsible for meeting the support needs of a designated group of schools. The team meets fortnightly to plan strategies and programs to address the needs of individual and groups of students.

The Team Leader, together with relevant members of the team (depending upon the case) works in close collaboration with the school administrator and SAER Coordinator. Interagency and external support is drawn upon and utilised as required.

In this way, a holistic, coherent response to student needs is provided. The needs of students experiencing difficulties at school are complex and invariably multi-dimensional. The multi-disciplinary approach enables a response to curriculum needs; behaviour, social and emotional needs; attendance issues; specific pedagogy (e.g. for Aboriginal, ESL students) and allows for adjustments to the school environment.

The result is engaged, motivated students connected to their school and their continued learning, with clear, attainable future goals and aspirations.
