Executive Email Week 2 Term 3 2005

THE GIFTED AND TALENTED EDUCATION PROGRAM

In Term 2, over 200 Year 7 students participated in the testing for The Gifted and Talented Education Program (the Academic Talent Program (ATP) and/or Languages Other Than English (LOTE) program) in the Canning Education District.  It was anticipated that parents receive their child's results for ATP and LOTE in mid July.  Notification of first round offers of placement in all programs (Year 8, 2006) is currently underway.

We would like to thank the 3 schools who hosted the testing sessions; Belmont City College, Kelmscott SHS and Marri Grove PS.  The schools welcoming approach to the students and their parents, along with the areas reserved for the testing, helped to reassure and relax the students.  Thank you also to the 5 staff from District Office who assisted with the supervision of the testing; Cassandra Best, Helen DePilato, Ross Fuhrmann, Sam James and Gayle Pitcher.

CHILD PROTECTION PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

Reminder to Principals that all DET employees must undertake six hours of mandatory Child Protection Professional Learning.  Most schools have been in touch with District Office and have confirmed dates and times and requested support as required.  If you have not made contact with District Office about your arrangements please do so as soon as possible.

Alternatively, District Office is offering two six hour sessions in the holidays for staff as an option to attending a school based presentation.  Dates are:

Wednesday 28 September  &   Monday 12 December

If you have staff that wish to attend either of these days, please ensure that you contact Shelley Peterson either via email as per address book, or on 9311 0512.

Schools who intend to implement the Child Protection Learning Program without DO or School Psychologist support, should contact Shelley Peterson for a Training Package and PowerPoint presentation.

SPORTS ABILITY PROGRAM>

The Canning District is seeking 10 schools to take part in Sports Ability an inclusive sports program funded and delivered by the Australian Sports Commission and to be piloted in 2005. The program will  be collaboratively managed with members of the Departments Inclusive Education Standards Directorate.

Sports Ability is an inclusive activities program with two main aims:
to provide teachers and support staff with more ways of including young people with disabilities in physical activity and sport, particularly those who have higher support needs; and to create a medium for the integration of young people with and without disabilities in inclusive activities.

The delivery of the program consists of three main aspects: equipment, resource material and training. The Australian Sports Commission will fund the delivery of these aspects and the Inclusive Education Standards Directorate have funded teacher relief for the participants' training.>

The Australian Sports Commission has requested that the schools involved provide some feedback and evaluation of the project. This would include students involved in the program as well as the teachers and/or support staff who deliver the program. Each group would have to complete two questionnaires, a baseline information questionnaire and a follow-up questionnaire. Further information is available from Juanita Healy, Manager, Curriculum Services on 9311 0515.>

WATTLE GROVE WINNERS

Wattle Grove PS  have won the Westfield Carousel 'Shop For Your School Competition' for the fourth year in a row

Over the 4 years the competition  has provided in excess of $50,000 in ICT and Media Resources for the school. Congratulations to Julie Roberts, her staff and  the  Wattle Grove Primary School community.>

BE ALERT!

A Fremantle District school recently received an email from Spearwood PS on a seemingly official letterhead asking for donations for a student with cancer.  This student, John Cragg, does not exist.  The email contained letters supporting the scheme on letterheads from other schools. Investigations are continuing but please keep an eye out.

Signed

Garry Hewitt, Kim Guelfi , David Lee
