School Psychology Service
School psychologists have specialised training
in both Psychology and Education. They use their training and skills
to work with schools, parents and other professionals to ensure
that every child learns in a safe, healthy and supportive environment.
School psychologists understand school systems, effective teaching
and successful learning.
Training:
School psychologists complete a 4 year psychology degree as well
as an education degree at a recognised university. The training
emphasises mental health, school organisation, child development,
learning, behaviour and motivation. In order to work as a fully
qualified psychologist in Western Australia one must complete 2
years of supervised practice and become registered with the Psychologists
Registration Board of Western Australia.
What do school psychologists do?
School psychologists tailor their support to meet the needs of the
individual school. Most provide the following services:
- Consultation: with teachers, parents
- Assessment: using a wide variety of techniques
at an individual, group and school level
- Intervention: providing support to teachers, parents
and children in resolving conflict, counseling, programs, providing
information
- Prevention: through school wide initiatives such
as developing programs, fostering inclusive practices, and professional
earning
- Education: through the presentation of professional
learning
- Research and Planning: evaluation of the effectiveness
of programs, create new knowledge, contribute to planning
