THE TASK
The students of an upper primary school class were
asked to help the junior teachers to explain a number of values
to their students. These included honesty, kindness, patience and
tolerance. The students decided to make a series of movies as a
resource for this class.
A different value was selected by each group of
3 or 4 students. Students discussed their target audience, brainstormed
ideas, and used a storyboard to plan a movie. They worked in groups
to take digital photographs or film short skits that demonstrated
these values and used video
editing software to edit and add text.
These movies were then linked to a web page of
school values that could be accessed through the school Intranet.
ICT ENRICHMENT
-
A reusable resource was created that could
be accessed by anyone in the school.
-
Reviewing and editing the resource in order
to improve it was easily accomplished by working digitally.
-
Student understanding of each value was enhanced
by the deep engagement that was required of this in-depth task.

ASSESSMENT
- The assessment rubric was developed by the teacher in discussion
with the class and with the outcomes in mind. It was designed
to monitor the process as well as the movie product.
- Students self- and peer-evaluated their progress during and
at the end of the task using the assessment rubric.
- Monitoring the Viewing outcome was achieved through assessing
the final products in one-on-one teacher-student conferences.
They were asked to explain how they made meaning in the visual
text and to justify their choices.
