THE TASK
Students collaborated to design, manufacture and
market a set of greeting cards.
Firstly, the enterprise opportunities associated
with creating and selling a greeting card set were explored. The
target group for the product was identified and their needs and
tastes were considered. This enabled the class to identify factors
that would influence the topic (eg. birthday) and styles of cards
to be made.
The students then worked to express their ideas
and feelings about the specific topic of each greeting card into
art works appropriate for the purpose. They used the visual arts
elements and design principles to realise their ideas, using traditional
and ICT arts processes to create the images and appropriate texts.
The completed Essential Card Sets included birthday,
thank-you, farewell and good luck cards. Finally, they were packaged
and sold to the school community.
ICT ENRICHMENT
-
There was flexibility for students to use
both ICT and non-ICT methods, discussing the advantages of each
and justifying their choices.
-
Production processes were simple and cheap;
in particular colour image runs were cheaper using the colour
printer than by outsourcing colour photocopying.
-
Use of a word processor gave a clean, professional
look to the text, enhancing the product and boosting sales.

ASSESSMENT
- Evidence to support achievement of the learning outcomes was
collected mainly during the processes of design and manufacture.
- Visual diaries were useful to monitor development of the Arts
outcomes.
- Students peer assessed drafts and finished products, evaluating
them in context of Arts Ideas and Information.
