THE TASK
In this learning activity, ESL students worked
cooperatively to design, create and deliver presentations in English
about aspects of daily life on the Cocos Islands. Students were
required to analyse aspects of their lives including interests,
diet and family structure. They identified their opinions and feelings
about these aspects, and compared and contrasted their opinions
with those of other students.
Features of this learning activity were the comprehensive
student planning in cooperative groups, use of a student-negotiated
assessment rubric, ongoing reflection and integration of ICT-rich
tasks with non-ICT tasks.
ICT ENRICHMENT
-
Students shot digital images to include in
their presentations. They justified how the images would enhance
the messages they delivered.
-
Use of ICT enabled the students to edit and
improve their products with ease following self- and peer-review.
-
Oral presentation supported by a slide show
motivated the students to speak in English which they were otherwise
reluctant to do.

ASSESSMENT
- The students worked with the teacher to analyse the task and
to develop a simple assessment rubric. From the very beginning,
everyone knew exactly what needed to be done in order to achieve
the outcomes.
- Progress was assessed both formally and informally at various
stages by peers, other classes, teachers and parents.
- Written and verbal feedback from peers and teacher was used
by students to make improvements to their work.
- ESL Bandscales were used to assess oral presentations delivered
throughout the program.
