THE TASK
In this activity, students created newspapers intended
for an audience of parents and the local community. The purpose
of the newspapers was to give the audience an in-depth view of the
day-to-day activities of the class and school.
Students examined in detail the characteristics
of the various text types represented in newspapers. Based on this
knowledge, and following visits from journalists, they produced
articles, advertisements, letters to the editor, cartoons and feature
articles to populate their own electronic newspapers. The students
took on the roles of journalists, editors, advertisers, designers
and photographers working collaboratively to recreate the processes
involved in producing “real” newspapers. Students also
collaborated with other classrooms via the Newsday
Collaborative Project.
ICT ENRICHMENT
-
Online collaboration enabled students to
peer review news items with students in other countries, to
compare use of language and to include relevant news items from
their peers in their own newspapers.
-
Information and production resources were
maximised by offering a range of ICT as well as print resources.
Students therefore needed to make decisions about appropriate
resources to complete aspects of the task.
-
The Web offered useful resources impossible
to access otherwise, e.g., current front pages of a sample of
the World's newspapers at the Interactive
Museum of News.
SUGGESTED RESOURCES

ASSESSMENT
- A negotiated rubric articulated the outcomes expected as a result
of completing the newspaper. Used for self-assessment and teacher
assessment.
- Peer assessment of completed product based on a Plus-Minus-Interesting
strategy.
- Self assessment in which students compared their product to
those sent from different schools around the world.
- Student demonstration of the outcomes was monitored throughout
the task using written documents including rough drafts and through
questioning.
