A Day in the Life of a Japanese Child

Years 3 - 7Years 7 - 10

THE TASK

Students used the inquiry process to complete the task of creating a mini-book titled, “A Day in the Life of a Japanese Child.” After planning their investigations, the class linked up with school students in a Japanese classroom through the ePALS website. They collaborated with their ePALS to swap information about school life. Further information was collected from the Internet and from print resources, organised, interpreted and presented in a mini-book.

ICT ENRICHMENT

  • Online collaboration allowed purposeful interaction with a peer group in Japan.
  • Information was gathered from ePALS, the Internet and print resources, enabling students to compare detail, accuracy and authenticity of the different sources.
  • Products were drafted on word processor to allow ePALS in Japan to review them.
  • Word processing acted as a productivity tool to allow easy editing and clean product output.

SUGGESTED RESOURCES

ASSESSMENT

  • Criteria negotiated with students.
  • Progress discussed in student / teacher conferences.
  • Outcomes monitored using evidence from observations, conferences, emails to ePALS, written peer-evaluations, draft and final products.
  • Inquiry process monitored using observations and student process scrapbooks (where they collected and sorted information and ideas).
  • Self and peer assessment also gave students insights into their learning.
