THE TASK
This learning program investigated the dietary
needs of elite Australian sports people. The central task was to
devise, produce, evaluate and promote a high-energy health food
bar suitable for a high performance sports person.
Firstly, students researched a chosen Australian
athlete’s diet to determine their dietary needs and to compare
them with the students’ own dietary needs. Then, critical
thinking tools were used to analyse the ingredients and health claims
of commercially available health food bars. Finally, they devised,
produced, evaluated and promoted their own high-energy health food
bar. These activities required students to work cooperatively, to
think critically and to reflect on their findings.
ICT ENRICHMENT
-
Relevant information was available only on
the Web (e.g., Sports nutrition information on the AIS website).
-
Students were encouraged to select and justify
appropriate ICT or non-ICT strategies for completing each activity.
-
The task and supporting materials were made
available on an Intranet site to facilitate access in any part
of the school.
