Rationale

The Curriculum through ICT Program is underpinned by the belief that information and communication technologies (ICT) make significant contributions to student learning. For teachers, ICT enables the design and delivery of flexible and engaging learning opportunities and improved monitoring and assessment procedures relating to student progress. For students, ICT enables learning that is responsive to their learning styles and needs. Strategically, ICT offers significant support towards the elevation of curriculum standards in Western Australia and progress towards the achievement of the National Goals for Schooling in the 21st Century.

About the Program

As ICT becomes more embedded into the daily lives of teachers and students and systemic online curriculum services are progressively made available to schools, the Curriculum through ICT Program provides the Department’s strategic and operational leadership, direction and policy advice in this key area.

The Program supports the raising of curriculum standards through its focus on:

  • timely, effective professional learning (PL) for school leaders to build the capacity of all teachers in using a wide range of ICT in education;
  • providing vision and planning for an education system supported by online curriculum services delivering quality syllabus and resources;
  • the development, management and implementation of ICT teaching and learning services for K-12 education; and developing leadership for educational change across the system.

Strategic Connections

The Program is part of the State Government’s “Plan for Government Schools 2004-2007” as it supports the overall objective to: ‘ensure that all students achieve the standards expected of them at key stages of schooling’ and specifically targets:

  • Key Objective 1 : ‘to develop and support flexible approaches to teaching and learning that motivate and engage students in appropriate educational programs’,
  • Key Objective 2 : ‘to promote professional learning; develop professional knowledge and expertise; and ensure that all staff are valued and supported’, and
  • Key Objective 4 : ‘to provide strong organisational support for the work of schools’.

Additionally, the Program connects with all Directorates in the Curriculum Standards Division as ICT increases its impact across all areas of learning. Beyond the Division, collaboration is also critical with the ICT Directorate as the Program’s work is often dependent on the provision and management of ICT infrastructure in schools specific to curriculum needs. In addition, the Program ensures partnerships with stakeholders outside the Department – in other states and organisations, resulting in improved connections.
