Students live in a world that is rich in online digital information and communication technologies (ICT), therefore the school's learning environment should also be equally rich in ICT, compatible with their home and social contexts.
Schools' Online Curriculum Services (SOCS) deliver online tools and services to support the vision whereby schools will become networked learning communities and where the use of ICT is an integral part of teaching and learning.
What tools and services are available?
Online Teaching and Learning System (OTLS)
The Online Teaching and Learning System provides teachers with the tools to plan, deliver, monitor and evaluate
educational programs for students online.
Online Professional Learning (OPL)
The Online Professional Learning System enables teachers to access a range of online professional learning opportunities offered by the Department. These can be accessed via the portal. There are also other learning opportunites provided through Teachers Have Class!
The Learning with ICT project is a State Government initiative to improve learning opportunities for public school students, through the use of information and communications technology(ICT).
Collaborative Projects allow students and teachers to work collaboratively with other students and teachers from across the state. They allow access to discussion forums, online surveys, digital resources and interactive activities. The current project is The Climate Change Project.
Email and Calendar Access- Each member of the Deparment of Education and Training (DET) has access to online email and calendar.
Instant Messenger - A system that allows instant text communication or 'chat' between two or more people through a network.*
Web Conferencing - A system used to conduct live meetings or presentations over the Internet.*
*Instant Messenger and Web Conferencing Services are provided to OTLS teachers and can be accessed through the DET Portal
Teachers can search and use a large collection of teaching and learning resources.
Department of Education and Training Resources Online (DETRO) There are over 22 000 resources from The Le@rning Federation, DET Teaching Resources and CMIS Recommended Resources.
K-10 Syllabus This website provides K-10 Syllabus documents, scope and sequence and related resource materials.
Curriculum Materials Information Services (CMIS) This website provides advice to WA teachers to assist them in selection and use of quality curriculum resources.
