Planning for Learning

The Planning for Learning project was established to support teachers by providing real examples of teaching programs that are referenced to the Outcomes and Standards Framework and the Curriculum Guides along with syllabus and other support materials.

These examples of classroom planning would particularly support graduates and isolated teachers, but would also be useful for experienced classroom practitioners.

Experienced teachers across each of the phases of development have contributed copies of their classroom programs or units of work. Most examples are 4 – 6 week units of work and between them cover the eight learning areas of the curriculum.

The examples contain some common elements:

• links to the Outcomes and Standards Framework - for both planning and assessment purposes;
• what students need to know – with links to Curriculum Guides or other documents;
• key tasks or activities (what students will be doing) and how assessment is built into the plan; and
• useful resources and support materials.

Although there are common elements, the planning examples illustrate a wide variety of strategies and models of good practice. Clearly, there is no one ‘right’ or preferred model for planning.

The examples are authentic teacher - written documents. Given this authenticity, you need to be aware that some teachers may have used earlier versions of documents (eg the initial version of the Department’s Outcomes and Standards Framework), and they have referred to a wide selection of commercial publications.

The intent of this project is to provide a choice of planning approaches and styles that all teachers can read and select from to assist their own planning. The uniqueness of individual schools, local communities and of the student mix in a classroom means that planning approaches need to fit a particular context. However, seeing how other teachers plan can be a very useful starting point for everyone.

The Department intends to keep collecting examples from teachers, to provide more models and approaches.
