Oceans

Based on the Children's Book Week 2003 theme:
Oceans of Stories.

Curriculum Context
Oceans cover over 70 percent of the earth's surface and have influenced everything on our planet from the climate, landscape, and, flora and fauna to the way people live. It is not surprising, therefore, that the sea or the beach feature significantly in literature from the earliest mythology and romantic poetry to the contemporary novels of writers such as Tim Winton
.

In Australia where more than 85 percent of the population clings to a narrow coastal strip and summer holidays are strongly associated with the beach, stories that incorporate an ocean theme are relevant and capture the interest of most students.

Neptune/Poseidon, mermaids, sea voyages, shipwrecks, pirates, smugglers, boat people, fishing, marine animals, environmental issues, surfing, boating and sailing; there are countless opportunities for stimulating the imagination and helping students to achieve learning outcomes through an ocean theme.

Different approaches are suggested, taking account of students' interests and abilities in each Phase of Development.
