Encouraging Home Libraries

British author, Anne Fine, the current Children's Laureate, maintains that everyone needs books.

Her wonderful My Home Library website is aimed at encouraging children to build up their own book collection.

The site contains numerous book plates, in three sizes, featuring original designs donated by 27 illustrators including Nicola Bayley, Quentin Blake, Caroline Binch, Penny Dale, Debi Gliori, Philippe Dupasquier, Shirley Hughes and Jill Murphy.

These book plates will delight readers young and old and provide excellent motivation to own and read books. They can be printed and freely copied for non commercial use.

Other sections of the site include:
  • Useful suggestions on how children can obtain second-hand books;
  • Book reviews;
  • Ideas for teachers who wish to encourage their students to build up a personal library. For example set up a book swap scheme or run a competition to see who finds the best second-hand book for the lowest price.
Idea light bulb Why not:
  • Print off a bundle of book plates and have them available in your library or classroom?
  • Run a Book Week competition asking students to design their own book plates and vote on the winning design?
