Popular author and illustrator,
Bruce Whatley was born in the United Kingdom, immigrated
to Australia as a child with his parents, moved
back to the UK for a while to study and work, worked
for a time in the US and now lives in NSW with his
wife Rosie Smith, who has co-authored several of
his titles.
Bruce is inspired by his family, with his Boxer
dog featuring in several of his picture books. He
uses a variety of illustration medium including
gouache, pen and ink, and watercolour. His style
is humourous and imaginative; his aim is to entertain
and surprise the reader.

Award-winning author, Margaret
Wild was born in South Africa in 1948 and moved
to Australia in 1973. She has been a journalist
and now works as an editor and writer in Sydney.
She has written many memorable picture books which
have been illustrated by a diversity of Australia's
best illustrators.
Her books are usually multi-layered, often poignant,
humorous; and the language is always enriching and

Carole Wilkinson

Popular
and award-winning British author Jacqueline Wilson
is the Children's Laureate for 2005-2007.
She was also awarded an OBE in 2002 for services
to literacy in schools. Jacqueline has sold millions
of books and has been translated into more than
thirty languages. Her stories aimed at readers in
middle childhood are written with humour and sensitivity
and capture the life and problems of children in
contemporary society. Some titles can be enjoyed
by younger readers if read aloud and others dealing
with more serious issues will engage young teenagers,
particularly girls.

Tim Winton, one of Western Australia's
most popular and well-known authors, writes novels,
short stories, and non-fiction for both adults and
children. At the age of ten, Tim decided on writing
as a career and had work published as a teenager.
He won The Australian/Vogel Prize in 1981
for his first novel, An Open Swimmer. Since
then, he has won The Miles Franklin Award for Shallows,
1984, Cloudstreet, 1991, and Dirt Music,
2002 and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize for
The Riders and Dirt Music.
Lockie Leonard Legend, a novel for teenagers,
was an Honour Book in the Australian Children's
Book Awards for Older Readers in 1998. Tim's work
has been adapted for stage, screen and radio and
translated into twelve languages. His writing evokes
a strong sense of place and is perceptive and witty.

Steven Woolman, illustrator,
graphic designer and author of children's books
was born and still lives in Adelaide. After completing
university he worked for a publisher as a designer
and illustrator of educational books. He now works
full time as an illustrator and lately also as an
author from his home.
Steven works in a variety of media and has produced
a number of award-winning an notable picture books.
He especially enjoys illustrating science-fiction,
horror and 'twisted' tales as is reflected in his
ability to evoke the sinister in books such as The
Watertower, Caleb and Dreamwalker.
